What Is TQWL?
TQWL stands for Tatkal Quota Waitlist. It is the waitlist within the Tatkal emergency quota on Indian Railways. When the Tatkal quota is full, additional bookings go into TQWL.
TQWL is different from GNWL: it can only clear if a Tatkal-confirmed passenger cancels. Because Tatkal cancellations attract very high charges (up to 100% of the fare in some cases), very few Tatkal passengers cancel โ making TQWL one of the hardest waitlists to confirm.
TQWL Confirmation Chances
- TQWL 1: Small chance if a Tatkal passenger cancels before chart preparation.
- TQWL 2โ5: Very rare to confirm. Do not rely on it for confirmed travel.
- TQWL 5+: Essentially no chance of confirmation. Book an alternative.
Unlike GNWL or RLWL, TQWL does not benefit from emergency quota released 4 hours before departure โ that quota goes to general waitlist passengers first.
TQWL vs GNWL vs PQWL
Among all waitlist types, the general confirmation order is: GNWL > RLWL > PQWL > TQWL.
TQWL is at the bottom because it depends entirely on Tatkal cancellations, which are extremely rare. If you have a TQWL ticket, treat it as almost certainly unconfirmed and plan accordingly.
Can You Travel With TQWL?
After chart preparation, if your TQWL is still not confirmed (shows WL status), your e-ticket is not valid for travel. You cannot board the train. If you booked a physical counter ticket (I-ticket), you may be allowed to board but will travel without a berth.
What to Do With a TQWL Ticket
- If your journey is within 2 days, do not wait โ book an alternative immediately.
- Check if the same train has regular quota with GNWL or RAC seats.
- Look at alternate trains on the same route.
- Consider current reservation (available at the station 4 hours before departure).
