Diwali, Holi, summer holidays, Eid — during Indian Railways' peak seasons, confirmed tickets on popular routes are nearly impossible to get if you wait. Here are 8 proven strategies to maximise your chances.
1. Book Exactly at ARP Opening
The 60-day ARP window opens at 8:00 AM on the booking date. For any popular route during a festival period, set a calendar reminder and be on IRCTC exactly at 8:00 AM. Most popular trains on Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Patna routes sell out within 15–30 minutes of opening.
2. Use Aadhaar-Verified Account
An Aadhaar-verified IRCTC account allows 12 bookings per month instead of 6. If you need multiple tickets (family trip), verify your account before the peak booking period starts.
3. Try Alternate Dates (±1–2 Days)
If 15 October is fully booked, check 14 or 16 October. Peak season crowds shift around specific festival days — adjacent dates often have much better availability.
4. Try Alternate Trains on Same Route
Popular routes like Delhi–Patna have 8–12 daily trains. If the Rajdhani is full, check Humsafar, Superfast, or Express trains on the same day. Less glamorous trains often have better availability at a fraction of the price.
5. Check Different Classes
If Sleeper is showing WL 80, check 3AC — it may still have confirmed berths. Many passengers avoid AC classes due to cost, leaving them with better availability even during peak season.
6. Book Tatkal as Backup
If your WL is high and not moving, prepare a Tatkal backup. One day before travel, at exactly 10 AM (AC) or 11 AM (non-AC), book a Tatkal ticket on the same or alternate train. Tatkal seats are separate from the main quota and are often available even when regular quota shows deep waitlists.
7. Use Special Trains Announced by Indian Railways
Indian Railways typically runs festival special trains on popular routes during Diwali, Holi, summer holidays, and Chhath Puja. These are announced 2–3 weeks before festivals. Subscribe to IRCTC notifications and news to catch these when they open for booking.
8. Set a PNR Alert for Waitlisted Tickets
If you are stuck on a waitlist, do not check IRCTC manually every hour. Set up a free PNR Alert — you will receive a WhatsApp notification the moment your WL moves, reaches RAC, or confirms. This lets you make timely decisions about booking alternatives without missing the moment your ticket improves.
