Two main ticket types compete for every Indian Railways passenger: the regular General ticket (advance booking, can be waitlisted) and the Tatkal ticket (last-minute, confirmed but costly). Here is how to decide which to book.

General Ticket: The Advance Booking Route

When you book a General ticket 30โ€“60 days in advance, you pay the lowest base fare and have the best chance of a confirmed berth. The trade-off: if quota is exhausted, you go on a waitlist (WL, RAC) and confirmation is not guaranteed.

Best for: Planned trips, flexible travellers, leisure journeys where you can book 3โ€“6 weeks ahead.

Tatkal Ticket: Guaranteed Confirmation

Tatkal opens one day before departure at 10 AM (AC) or 11 AM (SL). You pay the base fare plus a Tatkal surcharge and receive a confirmed berth immediately โ€” no waiting, no waitlist.

Best for: Last-minute travel, urgent journeys, business trips where missing the train is not an option.
