Quick guide: WL (GNWL) is the best waitlist to be on. Above WL 30β40, start planning a backup. After WL 50, do not depend on the ticket confirming without a backup plan in place.
What Is WL (GNWL)?
When your PNR shows WL or GNWL, you are in the General Waitlist β the main waitlist queue for passengers booking from the train's origin or main stations. GNWL moves the fastest of all waitlist types because the General quota is large and has the most cancellations.
WL (GNWL) Confirmation Chances Table
| WL Number | Confirmation Chance | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| WL 1β5 | 85β95% | Almost certain to confirm. Track but travel as planned. |
| WL 6β15 | 70β85% | Good chances. Keep a soft backup plan. |
| WL 16β30 | 50β70% | Reasonable. Book a backup if journey is important. |
| WL 31β50 | 25β45% | Risky. Have a confirmed backup ready. |
| WL 51β75 | 10β20% | Very low. Book an alternative train now. |
| WL 76+ | Below 10% | Do not depend on this ticket. |
Factors That Affect WL Movement
- Route popularity: DelhiβMumbai, DelhiβHowrah, and ChennaiβBangalore routes see the most cancellations and fastest WL movement.
- Season: Peak seasons (summer, Diwali, Chhath Puja) have less movement β fewer people cancel.
- Train type: Superfast Express trains have larger quotas and more WL movement than Passenger or Express trains.
- Class: Sleeper class sees more cancellations than 3AC or 2AC.
- Days before departure: Most movement happens in the last 7 days, especially after Tatkal opens (1 day before departure).
When Does WL Improve to RAC or CNF?
WL tickets upgrade in two stages:
- Before chart: As passengers cancel, WL moves up β first to RAC, then to CNF.
- After chart: Remaining WL e-tickets are automatically cancelled. You cannot board with WL after chart is prepared.
Track every change with a free WhatsApp PNR alert β you get a message the instant your WL improves to RAC or CNF.
WL vs RAC vs CNF β Quick Comparison
- WL: On waitlist. Cannot board after chart if still WL. Refund automatically issued.
- RAC: Can board. Shares a side-lower berth. May get full berth after chart.
- CNF: Confirmed. Full berth assigned. Coach and berth shown after chart.
