What is RAC in Train Tickets?
RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. When you book an IRCTC train ticket and your PNR shows RAC status, it means you have a confirmed seat to travel — but you will share a berth with one other passenger instead of getting a full berth to yourself.
Specifically, a RAC berth is a side lower berth (SL) that is shared between two RAC passengers. Each gets half the berth to sit, and one may get to lie down if the other is a short-distance traveller.
RAC vs Waitlist — What's the Difference?
Many passengers confuse RAC with Waitlist (WL). Here is the key difference:
- RAC: You are guaranteed boarding. You will travel, but share a berth.
- Waitlist (WL): You are not guaranteed boarding. You cannot board the train unless your status moves to RAC or Confirmed before chart preparation.
If your ticket shows RAC/1, RAC/2 etc., you will definitely travel. If it shows WL/45, you cannot board unless the number drops to RAC or Confirmed.
Will My RAC Ticket Get a Full Berth?
Yes — RAC tickets frequently get upgraded to a full confirmed berth. This happens when:
- Another passenger cancels their confirmed ticket
- A waitlisted passenger does not board (TTE marks their berth vacant)
- Chart preparation happens and there are spare berths
The closer your RAC number is to RAC/1, the higher your chance of getting a full berth. RAC/1 almost always gets confirmed before or during the journey.
How to Check RAC Ticket Confirmation Status
You can check your RAC PNR status on PNR Alert by entering your 10-digit PNR number. The status updates in real time as cancellations happen.
The best way to track RAC confirmation is to set up a WhatsApp alert — you will get a message the moment your RAC ticket upgrades to a confirmed berth, so you do not have to keep checking manually.
When Does RAC Chart Get Prepared?
Chart preparation typically happens 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure. At this point, all cancellations are processed and final berth allocations are made. Many RAC passengers get confirmed at this stage.
Even after chart preparation, the TTE (Train Ticket Examiner) can allot a vacant berth to you if a confirmed passenger does not board.
RAC Confirmation Probability by Number
- RAC 1–5: Very high chance (~85–95%) of full berth confirmation
- RAC 6–15: Good chance (~60–75%)
- RAC 16–30: Moderate (~30–50%)
- RAC 30+: Low, but still guaranteed travel on shared berth
