Where to Find Each Number on Your IRCTC E-Ticket

Open your IRCTC booking confirmation email or the PDF e-ticket:

  • PNR No.: Large, prominent at top of the ticket. This is what you share when someone asks for your PNR.
  • Booking ID / Transaction ID: Usually in a smaller font below or beside the PNR. Sometimes labelled "Transaction ID" or "Booking ID."
  • Both are also in the booking confirmation SMS โ€” PNR is typically mentioned first.

When to Use Which

  • Use PNR when: checking ticket status on IRCTC/PNR Alert/NTES, sharing details with TTE, getting WhatsApp PNR alerts, checking chart status, telling someone your ticket details.
  • Use Booking ID when: contacting IRCTC customer care (helpline: 14646), tracking a refund on IRCTC's website, filing a dispute about a failed booking or wrong charge, referring to a cancelled ticket.

Why Are There Two Numbers?

The railway system (Indian Railways / CRIS) assigns the PNR when your ticket is booked in the central reservation system. IRCTC is the online portal that sits on top of this system and generates its own Booking ID for its own transaction records. They are linked but serve different purposes โ€” PNR for the railway, Booking ID for IRCTC's own operations.
