What Is Ladies Quota in Indian Railways?

Ladies quota (LD) is a separate seat reservation quota maintained by Indian Railways specifically for solo female passengers. A certain number of lower berths in each train are set aside under this quota, giving women travellers a dedicated, safer section in the coach.

Eligibility Rules

  • Applicable only for solo female passengers (travelling alone)
  • Booking must have only one passenger โ€” the female traveller
  • Women travelling with a male companion or as part of a group do not qualify
  • Available across Sleeper class and AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A)
  • Senior women (65+) and women with child (below 5 years) sometimes get additional preference

What Does Ladies Quota Give You?

  • A confirmed lower berth โ€” making boarding and sleeping easier
  • Berths are grouped together in the coach, creating a safer environment
  • Often better availability than the general quota (GNWL) on crowded trains

How to Book Ladies Quota on IRCTC

  1. Go to irctc.co.in and search for your train
  2. On the availability screen, look for the "LD" quota column (next to GN, CK etc.)
  3. Click on "LD" if it shows availability (CNF or a low WL number)
  4. On the passenger details page, confirm you are adding only a single female passenger
  5. Complete booking โ€” you will get a lower berth assignment after chart preparation

Tip: If LD quota shows WL on IRCTC, it is a separate waitlist from the main quota. LD WL 1โ€“5 usually confirms easily.

Ladies Quota vs General Quota โ€” Which Is Better?

For solo women travellers, always check ladies quota first. It often has better availability and guarantees a lower berth. If ladies quota is full or shows a high waitlist, book under the general quota (GN/GNWL) as a fallback.

Track Your Ladies Quota PNR

After booking, enter your PNR at PNR Alert and subscribe for free WhatsApp alerts. If the ladies quota ticket is on the waitlist, you will get an automatic notification when it is confirmed.
