What Does "Chart Prepared" Mean in IRCTC?
When your PNR status shows "Chart Prepared", it means the train's passenger chart (the list of all passengers and their seat/berth allotments) has been finalized by Indian Railways. After this point, no new bookings are accepted and the berth allotment is final.
Chart preparation is the last milestone before a train's departure. It determines the final travel status of every passenger — Confirmed, RAC, or Cancelled (for waitlisted tickets).
When Is the Chart Prepared?
The chart is typically prepared 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure from its origin station. However, this can vary:
- Most trains: 4 hours before departure from source station
- Some long-distance trains: Chart may be prepared the previous evening if the train departs early morning
- Trains starting at midnight: Chart is often prepared by 8–9 PM the previous night
Use PNR Alert to get a WhatsApp notification the moment chart is prepared for your train — so you know your final status hours before departure.
What Happens to Different Ticket Types After Chart Preparation?
Confirmed Ticket (CNF)
Your berth and coach are finalized. The PNR shows your coach number (e.g. S5) and berth number (e.g. 42). You can board the train with this allotment.
RAC Ticket
If your RAC ticket didn't upgrade to confirmed, you still travel but share a side lower berth. The TTE may allot you a full berth if a confirmed passenger doesn't board. Your PNR will show your RAC allotment after chart.
Waitlisted Ticket (WL)
If your ticket is still on the waitlist when chart is prepared, it is automatically cancelled. You cannot board the train. A full refund (minus cancellation charge) is processed automatically within 5–7 business days. You do not need to cancel manually.
Can I Still Board After Chart Preparation?
- Confirmed or RAC: Yes, absolutely. Show your ticket to the TTE.
- Waitlisted after chart: No. You cannot board with a WL ticket after chart preparation.
Can My Ticket Status Change After Chart Preparation?
No — once the chart is prepared, your status is final for boarding purposes. The only exception is the TTE, who can allot vacant berths to RAC passengers on the train if confirmed passengers don't board.
How to Check If Chart Is Prepared for Your Train
Enter your PNR on PNR Alert. The status will show "Chart Prepared" once finalized. You will also receive a WhatsApp alert automatically if you have set up alerts for your PNR — telling you the final confirmed/RAC/waitlisted status well before you reach the station.
