What Are IRCTC Waitlist Types?

When you book an IRCTC ticket and seats are full, your ticket enters a waitlist queue. But not all waitlists are the same — the type of waitlist determines how quickly (and whether) your ticket will get confirmed.

Understanding your waitlist type is key to knowing whether to keep your ticket or cancel and book an alternative.

GNWL — General Waitlist (Best for Confirmation)

GNWL stands for General Waitlist. This is the most common and most likely to confirm.

  • Allotted for passengers boarding from the train's origin station or nearby
  • Has the highest confirmation rate of all waitlist types
  • Confirms as passengers cancel from the full quota
  • Example: WL/GNWL 15 means you are 15th in the general waitlist

Confirmation chance: High. If your GNWL number is below 30–40, there is a good chance of confirmation before departure.

PQWL — Pooled Quota Waitlist (Harder to Confirm)

PQWL stands for Pooled Quota Waitlist. This is shared among multiple intermediate boarding points.

  • Allotted for passengers travelling between intermediate stations (not origin to destination)
  • Multiple stations share the same PQWL quota, so it is harder to confirm
  • A low PQWL number (1–10) can still confirm; higher numbers rarely do

Confirmation chance: Moderate to low. PQWL above 20–25 rarely confirms.

RLWL — Remote Location Waitlist

RLWL stands for Remote Location Waitlist. Allotted for passengers at remote stations that have a separate quota.

  • Similar to PQWL but for remote/smaller stations
  • Confirms only from cancellations within that specific remote quota

Confirmation chance: Low. These stations have fewer reserved seats so the waitlist clears slowly.

RSWL — Road-Side Waitlist

RSWL is for passengers at road-side stations (small stops). Very limited quota, very low confirmation rate.

TQWL — Tatkal Quota Waitlist

If you booked under the Tatkal quota and are waitlisted, your ticket is TQWL. Tatkal cancellations are rare (higher cancellation fees), so TQWL almost never confirms. If your ticket is TQWL, it is advisable to cancel and book through normal quota.
