Find Where Your Train Is Right Now

If someone's picking you up, if you're deciding when to leave for the station, or if you're just anxious at the platform โ€” the most useful thing you can know is: where is my train right now?

Use PNR Alert's live train tracker. Enter the 4โ€“5 digit train number and get the current station, delay in minutes, and ETA at your boarding station โ€” no login required.

Step-by-Step: How to Check Live Train Location

  1. Find your train number: It is on your IRCTC ticket next to the train name. E.g. "12951 Mumbai Rajdhani Express" โ€” the number is 12951.
  2. Go to pnralert.in/train-status: Enter the 5-digit train number in the search box.
  3. Select the correct date: For long-distance trains (20+ hours), the train may have started yesterday. Select the correct departure date from the origin station.
  4. Read the result: You will see the last reported station, delay in minutes, next station name, and estimated arrival time at upcoming stops.

What the Live Train Status Shows

Data shownWhat it means
Last stationMost recently departed station โ€” train is between this and the next stop
Delay (minutes)How late the train is versus its scheduled time
Next station ETAExpected arrival at the next scheduled stop โ€” adjusted for current delay
Your station ETAEstimated arrival at your boarding/alighting station based on current delay
Passed stationsAll stations the train has already crossed today

How Often Is Train Location Updated?

Train location data updates each time the train departs from a station. Indian Railways reports departure time through the NTES (National Train Enquiry System). For major stations on busy routes, this means updates every 30โ€“60 minutes. In remote stretches between big stations, the last report may be 1โ€“2 hours old.

GPS-equipped trains (Vande Bharat, Rajdhani with GPS) can have more granular location tracking. Standard express trains rely on station-reported data.

Why Is the Train Location Not Updating?

If the live status is stuck or shows "departed from [station] X hours ago" without updating, reasons include:

  • Remote section: The train is between two large stations with no intermediate reporting points.
  • Station reporting delay: The stationmaster at a small halt has not updated the system yet.
  • NTES data lag: The central system occasionally has a 15โ€“30 minute lag in processing departures.

If the train departed from the last station 2+ hours ago with no update, it is likely on a long stretch without intermediate stations (common in Rajasthan, Vidarbha, and tribal belt areas).

Train Location vs PNR Status โ€” What's the Difference?

PNR status tells you about your ticket โ€” whether it is CNF, RAC, or WL. It does not show the train's physical location.

Train running status tells you where the train is physically โ€” its current station, delay, and upcoming stop ETAs. It does not tell you about your berth.

Both are available without IRCTC login at pnralert.in.

Common Use Cases: When to Check Train Location

  • Before leaving home: If the train is running 2+ hours late, you can leave later and avoid waiting at the station.
  • Sending someone to pick you up: Share the updated ETA at your destination station so they arrive on time.
  • Planning a connecting journey: If you need to board another train at a junction, knowing the delay helps you plan the connection.
  • Worried parents / family members: Check if the train is on time when a family member is travelling.

How to Get WhatsApp Alerts for Train Delay

Instead of manually checking every hour, subscribe to train delay alerts on PNR Alert. You will get a WhatsApp message if your train is running more than 30 minutes late โ€” before you leave for the station. No app download required.

Subscribe by entering your PNR at PNR Alert โ€” the subscription covers both PNR status changes and train running status updates.

Alternative Ways to Check Train Location

  • 139 (IVR): Call 139 from any phone. Enter train number via keypad. Works even without internet.
  • NTES website: railenquiry.in โ€” official Indian Railways train running status.
  • Station inquiry: Ask at the inquiry counter at any railway station for live running status of your train.

pnralert.in shows the same NTES data with a cleaner interface and WhatsApp alert subscription.
