Indian Railways Ticket Classes: Complete Guide
Indian Railways has several ticket classes ranging from budget sleeper coaches to premium air-conditioned berths. Choosing the right class helps you balance comfort and cost for your journey.
Sleeper Class (SL)
Cost: Cheapest reserved option (typically โน200โโน1,000 for most routes)
Sleeper is the most popular class for long-distance travel. Each bay has 8 berths โ 2 Lower, 2 Middle, 2 Upper, 2 Side (Lower and Upper). The coaches are not air-conditioned, so they can get hot in summer and cold in winter.
- Best for: Budget travelers comfortable with non-AC travel
- Bedding: Not provided โ carry your own or rent on the train (โน25)
- Available on: Most Mail and Express trains
Third AC (3A)
Cost: Approximately 2.5x the Sleeper fare
Third AC is the sweet spot for most travelers โ comfortable, air-conditioned, and reasonably priced. Same 6-berth bay layout as Sleeper but with curtains, better lighting, and air conditioning.
- Best for: Comfortable long-distance travel without breaking the bank
- Bedding: Included (linens, pillow, blanket provided by Railways)
- Available on: All major Mail, Express, and Rajdhani trains
Second AC (2A)
Cost: Approximately 4x the Sleeper fare
Second AC has 4-berth open bays with side curtains for privacy. Wider berths and more comfortable than 3A. Bedding is included. Used commonly by business travelers.

- Bedding: Included
- Available on: Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and major Express trains
First AC (1A)
Cost: Approximately 7โ8x the Sleeper fare
First AC has private 2-berth or 4-berth coupes with lockable sliding doors. The most private and premium option on Indian Railways. Available only on select trains.
- Best for: Maximum privacy and comfort
- Bedding: Included, premium quality
- Available on: Rajdhani, some Duronto, and a few premium Express trains
Chair Car (CC)
Cost: Similar to Sleeper for short distances
Chair Car has reclining seats (not berths) arranged in rows. Used on day trains where overnight travel is not needed โ primarily Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, and Intercity Express.
- Best for: Short to medium daytime journeys
- Meals: Usually included on Shatabdi Express
- Available on: Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Intercity trains
Executive Chair Car (EC)
Cost: 2โ3x the Chair Car fare
Executive Chair Car has wider, fully reclining premium seats. Available on Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi. Includes meals and has the best seat quality for daytime travel.
