Tatkal Cancellation Rule: The One Thing to Know
Tatkal confirmed tickets give zero refund on voluntary cancellation. This is the single biggest difference between Tatkal and regular tickets. If you book a Tatkal ticket and later decide not to travel โ or can't travel โ you lose the entire fare including the Tatkal premium.
This is why you should only book Tatkal when you are 100% certain you will travel. It is not a ticket you can "cancel if plans change."
Tatkal vs Regular Ticket Cancellation โ Side by Side
| Scenario | Regular ticket | Tatkal ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel 48+ hours before | Flat charge: โน60โโน240 by class | No refund |
| Cancel 12โ48 hours before | 25% of fare deducted | No refund |
| Cancel 4โ12 hours before | 50% of fare deducted | No refund |
| Train cancelled by Railways | Full refund | Full refund (TDR) |
| Train delayed 3+ hours | Full refund via TDR | Full refund via TDR |
| TQWL not confirmed at chart | Auto-refund | Auto-refund |
When You CAN Get a Tatkal Refund (Exceptions)
The no-refund rule applies only to voluntary cancellations. The following situations entitle you to a refund:
- Train cancelled by Indian Railways: Full refund automatically processed, or you can cancel on IRCTC within 72 hours of scheduled departure.
- Train delayed more than 3 hours at origin: File a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) online on IRCTC within the departure time. Full fare including Tatkal premium refunded.
- Passenger with RAC/WL not accommodated on board: TDR can be filed โ rare but applicable if TTE doesn't give you a berth.
- TQWL ticket not confirmed at chart: Automatic full refund within 5โ7 days. No action needed.
- Wrong charge / IRCTC error: Contact IRCTC customer care.
How to File a TDR for Tatkal Refund
- Log in to IRCTC โ My Transactions โ Booked Ticket History
- Select the Tatkal ticket โ click File TDR
- Select the reason (train cancelled, delay, etc.)

TDR must be filed before the train's scheduled departure time, or within 72 hours for cancelled trains.
Tatkal Cancellation Charges by Class (Regular Rules for Reference)
For regular (non-Tatkal) ticket cancellations more than 48 hours before departure, the flat charges are:
| Class | Flat cancellation charge |
|---|---|
| 1AC | โน240 per passenger |
| 2AC | โน200 per passenger |
| 3AC / 3E | โน180 per passenger |
| Chair Car (CC/EC) | โน120 per passenger |
| Sleeper (SL) | โน60 per passenger |
| Second Sitting (2S) | โน30 per passenger |
These flat charges do not apply to Tatkal tickets โ Tatkal gets zero refund regardless of how early you cancel.
Key Advice Before Booking Tatkal
- Only book Tatkal if you are certain you will travel โ there is no safety net.
- If your plans are uncertain, book a regular ticket first and upgrade to Tatkal later only when confirmed.
- Keep the Tatkal ticket even if your plans get shaky โ a last-minute sell (via agent) is illegal and not possible on e-tickets. Your only option is to travel or lose the money.
