RAC 3 (Reservation Against Cancellation, position 3) means you have a confirmed seat on the train โ you will share a side lower berth with one other passenger. The question most people have is: will RAC 3 upgrade to a full private berth?
RAC vs Waitlist โ A Critical Difference
RAC is fundamentally different from WL. With RAC you can board the train. You share a side berth (usually the side lower in Sleeper and 3AC coaches) until a TTE assigns you a vacant full berth. With WL, you cannot board if chart shows WL at preparation time.
How RAC Upgrades to Confirmed
Upgrades happen in two stages:
- Before chart preparation: If confirmed passengers cancel, RAC moves up in queue. RAC 1 gets the first freed full berth, then RAC 2, then RAC 3.
- At the station / after departure: TTE checks for empty berths (no-shows) and allots them to RAC passengers starting from RAC 1.
RAC 3 Upgrade Probability
| Stage | Upgrade Chance for RAC 3 |
|---|---|
| Before chart (cancellations) | 30โ50% |
| At station / after departure (no-shows) | Additional 20โ35% |
| Combined probability | 55โ75% |
What to Expect With RAC 3
- You share a side lower berth. At night on a long-distance train, both RAC passengers need to manage with a narrower berth.
- Your seat number and coach are printed on your ticket โ board without hesitation.
- Approach the TTE shortly after departure and ask about vacant berths. Many upgrades happen within the first hour.
