The chart has been prepared and your ticket still shows WL. What happens now? The answer is clear and regulated by Indian Railways โ here is the complete process.
Immediate Effect: Automatic Cancellation
The moment chart preparation is complete and your status remains WL (Waitlisted), your ticket is automatically cancelled by the system. You do not need to:
- Call IRCTC helpdesk
- Cancel the ticket manually
- File a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt)
- Visit the station
Everything is handled automatically by Indian Railways' ticketing system.
Refund Process for Unconfirmed WL Ticket
| Step | What Happens | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Chart prepared | WL ticket auto-cancelled | 4โ8 hrs before departure |
| Refund initiated | IRCTC processes refund | Same day or next day |
| Bank credit | Money reaches your account | 5โ7 working days |
Can You Board the Train Anyway?
No. This is a firm rule. TTEs (Travelling Ticket Examiners) have a digital list of all valid passengers for every coach. If your PNR is on WL after chart preparation, you will be asked to leave the train. Boarding with a WL ticket after chart is a ticketless travel offence under Railway rules.
What to Do If Your WL Ticket Did Not Confirm
- Do not board โ wait for the automatic refund instead of risking a penalty
- Check alternate trains โ use IRCTC or PNR Alert to search for available trains on the same route
- Try Tatkal โ if you must travel same day, check Tatkal availability on another train
- General coach โ for short-distance travel, an unreserved general coach ticket is valid on any train on that route
What if the Train Was Late and You Needed Time?
Even if the train is delayed, the chart-based rules still apply. An unconfirmed WL ticket remains invalid regardless of train delays. The only exception is if Indian Railways cancels the train entirely โ in that case all passengers including WL get a full refund anyway.
