Can PNR Show Coach and Berth?

Yes. Once your ticket is confirmed and chart is prepared, PNR status shows the specific coach and berth assigned to you โ€” for example: S5/42 (Sleeper Coach 5, Berth 42) or B2/21 (Third AC Coach 2, Berth 21).

Understanding the Coach Code

  • S โ€” Sleeper class (S1, S2, S3...)
  • B โ€” Third AC (B1, B2, B3...)
  • A โ€” Second AC (A1, A2...)
  • H โ€” First AC (H1)
  • C โ€” Chair Car (C1, C2...)
  • D โ€” Executive Chair Car (D1...)

Understanding the Berth Number

In each bay of a Sleeper or 3A coach, berths are numbered sequentially:

  • Lower berths: 1, 4, 7, 10... (every third, starting at 1)
  • Middle berths: 2, 5, 8... (Sleeper class only)
  • Upper berths: 3, 6, 9...
  • Side berths (65โ€“72): Side Lower and Side Upper at the ends of each coach

When Are Coach and Berth Allotted?

For confirmed tickets, coach and berth are usually assigned at the time of booking. For RAC or upgraded WL tickets, coach and berth details appear after chart preparation โ€” typically 4โ€“6 hours before departure.

How to Check Coach and Berth From PNR

  1. Go to PNR Status Check.
  2. Enter your 10-digit PNR number.
  3. View passenger-wise status including coach and berth number.

On the platform, use the coach position indicator board to find where your coach will stop. The chart pasted on each coach door also lists all passengers and berths for that coach.
