How to Check Train Running Status by Train Number

Knowing a train's live running status is the fastest way to plan your station arrival, estimate delay, or let family know when you'll reach. Here's how to check it in under 30 seconds.

  1. Go to pnralert.in/train-status
  2. Enter the 4โ€“5 digit train number (e.g. 12951 for Mumbai Rajdhani)
  3. Select the correct departure date from source station
  4. Click Check โ€” results appear instantly

Where to Find Your Train Number

Your train number is on your IRCTC ticket, printed next to the train name. Example: "12259 Sealdah Duronto Express" โ€” the number is 12259. It is also on the SMS confirmation you receive after booking.

If you don't have the ticket handy, search for the train name at Train Schedule to find the train number.

Which Date to Select for Long-Distance Trains

This is the most common confusion. Train running status requires the departure date from the source station, not today's date or your boarding date.

Example: If Howrah Rajdhani (12302) departed Howrah yesterday at 14:05 and is expected to reach New Delhi tomorrow at 09:55, today's date on the status page should be yesterday (the departure date from Howrah). Selecting today would show a different run.

Journey lengthDate to select
Short-distance (<8 hours)Today's date (same day departure)
Overnight (8โ€“20 hours)Yesterday's date if train departed last night
Long-distance (20โ€“48 hours)The source departure date โ€” may be 2 days ago

What the Running Status Shows

  • Current station / last departed station: The most recently crossed station
  • Delay in minutes: How late the train is versus its scheduled timetable
  • Next station ETA: Expected arrival at the next stop
  • Your station ETA: Adjusted estimated arrival at your boarding or alighting station
  • All upcoming stops: With scheduled and expected arrival times

Train Running Status: "Not Available" or "Not Found"

If the result shows "status not available", possible reasons:

  • Wrong date selected: Most common reason. Double-check the source departure date.
  • Train doesn't run today: Some trains are weekly or bi-weekly. Verify on the train schedule.
  • Train not yet departed: If today's departure is later in the day, the run may not have started.
  • NTES data delay: The national railway data system occasionally has gaps of 15โ€“30 minutes.

How Often Does Running Status Update?

Status updates each time the train departs a station. For major stations, this means updates every 30โ€“60 minutes. On long stretches between big stations (e.g., Rajasthan desert or Vidarbha plateau), the status can go 1โ€“2 hours without change โ€” the train is simply between reporting points.

Instead of checking every hour, subscribe to train delay WhatsApp alerts. Enter your PNR at PNR Alert โ€” you'll get a WhatsApp notification if your train is running 30+ minutes late, before you leave home. No app download needed.
