Every Indian Railways train has two fundamentally different types of accommodation: General (Unreserved) coaches and Reserved coaches. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right ticket for your journey and avoid boarding the wrong coach.

General Coach (GN / 2G / Unreserved)

A general coach ticket lets you board any general coach on any train of the same route on your travel date. There are no assigned seats โ€” it is first come, first serve. General coaches can get very crowded, especially during peak hours and festival seasons.

Best for: Short journeys (under 3โ€“4 hours), budget travel, spontaneous travel without advance planning.

Sleeper Class (SL)

Sleeper class is the lowest tier of reserved accommodation. Each passenger gets a specific berth assignment โ€” upper, middle, lower, side upper, or side lower โ€” in a specific coach. You can sleep comfortably on overnight journeys.

Best for: Overnight journeys, medium to long distances, any travel where you want a guaranteed seat.

When General Coach Is a Viable Choice

  • Journey time is under 3 hours and a seat is not critical
  • Travelling light with a small bag, able to stand if needed
  • Last-minute travel where Sleeper WL is too long

Boarding Rules: Know Your Coach

General coaches are at the front and rear of most trains (coaches numbered GS or 0). Reserved coaches (starting with S for Sleeper, B for AC) are in the middle. Boarding the wrong coach is a common mistake โ€” always find your coach letter and number on the chart before boarding.
