What Is Shatabdi Express?

Shatabdi Express is a class of premium day trains operated by Indian Railways, connecting major cities within a single day. The name comes from "Shatabdi" meaning century in Hindi, as the trains were introduced to mark the centenary of Jawaharlal Nehru's birth in 1988.

Shatabdi trains are known for high speed, punctuality (relative to other trains), quality catering, and air-conditioned comfort. They are the default choice for business travellers and those preferring a quick same-day journey.

Shatabdi Classes — Chair Car vs Executive

  • Chair Car (CC): Air-conditioned coaches with reclining seats. Fares typically ₹400–1,200 depending on route. Most passengers choose this class.
  • Executive Chair Car (EC): Premium wider seats, extra legroom, better service. Fares typically ₹700–2,500. Available on busier routes like Delhi–Agra, Mumbai–Pune, Chennai–Bangalore.

Note: There is no Sleeper class on Shatabdi. These are purely day trains with seated coaches only.

  • Chennai – Bangalore (12007/12008): ~5 hours, the busiest Shatabdi in South India
  • Mumbai – Pune (12123/12124): ~3 hours, frequent service
  • Secunderabad – Visakhapatnam (12025/12026): ~8 hours

Is Food Included?

Yes — all Shatabdi fares include meals. You will receive tea and snacks on morning trains and lunch/dinner on trains with longer journeys. The catering is done by IRCTC and the quality is generally decent. You can also order additional items on some routes via e-catering.

Booking Tips

  1. Book 30–60 days in advance for popular routes (Delhi–Agra, Chennai–Bangalore).
  2. Shatabdi waitlist (WL) is harder to confirm than Mail/Express trains because Coach quota is smaller.
  3. Tatkal opens 1 day before departure at 10 AM — good option if last-minute seats are needed.
  4. Senior citizens, journalists, and defence personnel have special quota discounts.
