How to Check Train Running Status

Train running status shows the real-time location of a train โ€” which station it has last passed, how many minutes it is delayed, and the expected arrival time at upcoming stations. Here are all the ways to check it in 2026.

Method 1: PNR Alert (Fastest)

Visit pnralert.in/train-status and enter the train number. You will see the current location, delay, and status for each station ahead. No login required.

Method 2: NTES (National Train Enquiry System)

  1. Open enquiry.indianrail.gov.in or the NTES mobile app.
  2. Click Spot Your Train.
  3. Enter the train number and select the date of journey.
  4. View real-time status including last reported station and delay.

NTES is the official Railway source โ€” most accurate data but the interface is dated.

Method 3: IRCTC Rail Connect App

  1. Open the IRCTC Rail Connect app.
  2. Tap Train Status on the home screen.
  3. Enter the train number and date.
  4. View running status with a station-by-station timeline.

Method 4: WhatsApp (PNR Alert Bot)

Send TRAIN <number> (e.g. TRAIN 12951) to the PNR Alert WhatsApp number. You will get the current running status as a reply instantly โ€” useful when you are already chatting with the bot about your PNR.

Method 5: SMS

Send SPOT <train number> to 139 from any mobile number. The Railway Enquiry SMS service replies with the train location and delay. Works without internet.

Understanding the Delay Display

What You SeeMeaning
Right time / On timeTrain is running as per schedule
30 min lateTrain is currently 30 minutes behind schedule
Yet to startTrain has not departed from origin yet
Arrived / DepartedStatus at the last reported station
CancelledTrain has been officially cancelled by Railways

Why Is My Train Status Not Updating?

Running status is based on GPS and station reporting. Updates can be delayed by 15โ€“30 minutes in remote areas with poor GSM coverage. If the status hasn't changed in over an hour, try the NTES app directly or call the railway inquiry: 139.

Get Delay Alerts on WhatsApp

Instead of checking manually, subscribe to Train Delay Alerts on PNR Alert. Enter your train number and we will send you a WhatsApp notification when the train delay crosses your chosen threshold (30 min, 1 hour, or 2 hours).
