What Does "Chart in Progress" Mean on IRCTC?

When you check your PNR status and see "Chart in Progress", it means the Indian Railways reservation system is currently generating the final passenger chart for your train. This is a temporary status that appears 3-5 hours before departure.

What Happens During Chart Preparation?

During this window, the system:

  • Finalizes all RAC and WL ticket allocations
  • Assigns berths to RAC passengers
  • Cancels any remaining WL tickets that did not confirm
  • Generates the physical coach chart pasted at stations

Will My WL/RAC Ticket Change During This Window?

Generally, once chart preparation begins, the status is in the process of being finalized. Changes are minimal at this stage. The final status you see after "Chart Prepared" is what applies.

What Should I Do If I See "Chart in Progress"?

  • If RAC: You can board the train. Wait to see if you get upgraded
  • If WL: Check again in 30 minutes. If still WL after chart is prepared, you cannot board
  • Keep refreshing PNR Alert to see the final status

Difference Between "Chart in Progress" and "Chart Prepared"

Chart in Progress: Still being generated. Status may change.
Chart Prepared: Chart is finalized. Status is locked. WL tickets are cancelled. RAC and CNF are confirmed.

Check your final status instantly on PNR Alert.
