What Is Tatkal Ticket Booking?
Tatkal is a special quota in Indian Railways that allows passengers to book tickets at short notice — typically 1 day before departure. Tatkal seats are reserved separately and are available even when the general quota is fully booked or waitlisted.
Tatkal is ideal if you need to travel urgently and the regular quota is full. However, Tatkal tickets cost more than regular fares.
When Does Tatkal Booking Open?
- AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC): Tatkal booking opens at 10:00 AM, 1 day before the journey date
- Non-AC classes (SL, 2S): Tatkal booking opens at 11:00 AM, 1 day before the journey date
For example, if you want to travel on 25th April in SL class, Tatkal booking opens at 11:00 AM on 24th April.
Tatkal Charges — How Much Extra Do You Pay?
| Class | Min Tatkal Charge | Max Tatkal Charge |
|---|---|---|
| SL (Sleeper) | ₹100 | ₹200 |
| 3A (3-tier AC) | ₹300 | ₹400 |
| 2A (2-tier AC) | ₹400 | ₹500 |
| 1A (First AC) | ₹400 | ₹500 |
The actual Tatkal charge depends on the distance of travel — longer journeys have higher Tatkal charges within the above range.
Premium Tatkal vs Tatkal — What's the Difference?
Tatkal: Fixed premium above normal fare. Booking opens 1 day before departure at 10 AM / 11 AM.
Premium Tatkal (PT): Dynamic pricing — fares increase as seats fill up, similar to airline pricing. No concession for senior citizens, children, or other groups. Cancellation charges are very high.
Premium Tatkal seats are generally much more expensive than regular Tatkal. Avoid Premium Tatkal unless absolutely necessary.
Tips to Successfully Book a Tatkal Ticket
- Log in 10 minutes before the booking window opens — the IRCTC server gets extremely busy at exactly 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM
- Add passenger details in advance — save passenger details in your IRCTC profile so you don't have to type them during booking
- Use IRCTC iMudra wallet or UPI — payment via saved wallet is faster and avoids payment gateway failures
- Avoid using mobile browsers — use the IRCTC desktop website or the official IRCTC Rail Connect app
- Book for one passenger at a time if seats are limited — fewer passengers = faster processing
Can I Cancel a Tatkal Ticket?
Yes, but the cancellation charges are very high — often 50% to 100% of the Tatkal fare. For Premium Tatkal, there is no refund on cancellation. For regular Tatkal, cancellation is allowed but with heavy charges. Always double-check your travel plans before booking Tatkal.
Alternative to Tatkal — Check If Regular Quota Has Seats
Before booking Tatkal, always check if there are trains with regular confirmed availability on the same route. Use PNR Alert's Route Search to compare all trains between your source and destination with real-time seat availability.
