Can You Travel With a GNWL (Waiting List) Ticket?
No. Indian Railways rules are clear: a waitlisted ticket (GNWL, RLWL, PQWL, TQWL) does not permit boarding the train. Only tickets with CNF (Confirmed) or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) status allow travel.
What the Rules Say
According to Railway rules, a passenger with a WL ticket who boards the train is treated as travelling without a valid ticket. The TTE can:
- Charge the full fare from the boarding station
- Collect a penalty (excess charge)
- Ask you to deboard at the next station if no accommodation is available
What Happens When GNWL Does Not Confirm?
If your GNWL ticket is not confirmed at chart preparation time (usually 4 hours before departure):
- The ticket is automatically cancelled โ you do not need to manually cancel it
- A full refund is processed to your original payment method
- IRCTC typically processes the refund in 3-7 business days
Should I Cancel GNWL Early or Wait?
If you are sure you will not be getting a confirmed berth, cancel early. IRCTC charges cancellation fees that reduce as you approach the journey date. If you wait, you still get a full refund after auto-cancellation.
