When you see codes like GNWL 5 or RLWL 3 on your IRCTC booking, you are seeing the specific quota your ticket has been allocated under. Each quota is a separate pool of seats with different rules and confirmation chances. Here is a complete guide.

What Is a Quota?

Indian Railways divides the seats on each train into multiple quotas โ€” reserved allocations for different categories of passengers. This ensures that seats are available for passengers boarding at different stations, special categories (defence, senior citizens), and last-minute bookings.

Main Quotas and Their Meanings

Why Quota Affects Confirmation Chances

The size of the quota pool matters. GNWL has the largest cancellation pool โ€” any passenger booked on General quota for that class on that train can contribute a cancellation that moves GNWL up. PQWL and RLWL have smaller, isolated pools and move more slowly.

Which Quota Will I Get?

IRCTC automatically assigns quota based on:

  • Boarding station: Origin station passengers get GNWL; intermediate passengers may get PQWL or RLWL
  • Availability: If GNWL is full, IRCTC may offer RLWL or PQWL
  • Travel date: On certain dates, quota allocation changes

If you see your booking is on PQWL or RLWL instead of GNWL, check if boarding from an adjacent major station (which may qualify for GNWL) makes more sense for your journey.
