Chart preparation is the key moment for every rail passenger โ especially those on RAC or WL. But sometimes the PNR status does not update immediately after chart time, causing understandable panic. Here is what is actually happening and how to handle it.
When Is the Chart Prepared?
Indian Railways typically prepares the departure chart 4โ8 hours before the scheduled departure of a train. For overnight trains departing in the morning, this can happen the previous evening. The exact time varies by zone and station.
Why PNR Might Not Update Immediately
- Server propagation delay: IRCTC's servers take 30โ90 minutes to update all PNR records after chart data is compiled.
- High traffic periods: During festival season or peak hours, updates are slower.
- Third-party app cache: Apps like NTES or unofficial PNR checkers may show stale data. Always verify on IRCTC directly or PNR Alert.
How to Check If Chart Is Actually Prepared
- Physical charts at station: The most reliable method. Walk to your platform โ charts are pasted on each coach 2โ4 hours before departure. Find your coach letter and berth number directly on the paper chart.
- IRCTC status update: Once chart is done, your PNR will show coach and berth number (e.g., S4/32) if confirmed, or show WL/RAC final status.
- Station enquiry: Call the station enquiry number or ask a railway staff member at the enquiry counter.
What the Different Scenarios Mean
| Pre-Chart Status | Post-Chart Update | Can You Board? |
|---|---|---|
| CNF | CNF / Coach / Berth shown | Yes |
| RAC | RAC / Side berth shown | Yes |
| WL (any number) | Still WL or CAN | No |
What to Do If Chart Is Prepared But PNR Still Shows No Berth
If you were previously CNF and berth details are not yet showing online, your booking is still valid. Board the train, find the physical chart on your coach door, and locate your berth. The TTE can also verify your booking on their device.
