RAC 1: The Best RAC Position to Have
If your PNR shows RAC 1, you are in an excellent position. You are first in the RAC upgrade queue — you need just one confirmed passenger on your train to cancel or not board, and you get their full berth. On virtually every long-distance Indian Railways train, at least 1–3 confirmed passengers cancel or are no-shows.
Bottom line for RAC 1: 90–98% chance of getting a full berth on most routes. Travel with confidence — you almost certainly won't have to share the side-lower berth for the full journey.
How RAC 1 Upgrade Works
RAC upgrading to CNF happens in two phases:
- Before chart preparation (more than 4–6 hours before departure): If a confirmed passenger cancels their ticket online, the system immediately upgrades RAC 1 to CNF and the next RAC passenger fills the RAC 1 slot. You will see your PNR change from RAC 1 to CNF in real time.
- At departure / after chart: Once chart is prepared, online cancellations close. But on the train itself, the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) manages empty berths from no-shows. The TTE upgrades RAC passengers in order — RAC 1 is upgraded first. This typically happens within the first 30–60 minutes of the train journey.

What to Do on the Train with RAC 1
- Board the train normally — RAC 1 is a valid ticket. The TTE cannot deny you entry.
- Find your allotted side-lower berth — the RAC berth number is shown in your PNR after chart preparation.
- Locate the TTE early — introduce yourself as RAC 1. TTEs usually know who the RAC passengers are, but a polite reminder helps.
- Be patient for the first stop or two — TTEs typically complete berth allocation within the first 1–2 major stations.
