What Is Emergency Quota in Indian Railways?
Emergency quota (EQ) is a small number of reserved seats in each train that are held back until approximately 4 hours before departure from the originating station. These seats are not available for advance booking โ they are released at the last moment for genuine emergency travel needs.
When Is Emergency Quota Released?
Emergency quota is released approximately 4 hours before the scheduled departure from the train's origin station โ not from your boarding station. So if your train originates in Delhi at 8 PM, the EQ releases around 4 PM Delhi time, even if you are boarding at a later station.
How Emergency Quota Works
- A specific number of seats (typically 5โ30) are held in each class
- These appear on IRCTC as available 4 hours before origin departure
- They can also be booked at the station counter for the originating station's departures
- The station master has authority to allocate these for documented emergency cases
Can Emergency Quota Help Your Waitlisted Ticket?
Yes โ when emergency quota is released, the system automatically upgrades the highest waitlisted passengers first (WL1, WL2, WL3...). This is why WL1 and WL2 often get confirmed in the last 4โ6 hours before departure, sometimes right at chart preparation time.
For higher waitlist numbers (WL10+), emergency quota alone is unlikely to help โ but combined with regular cancellations in the last 24 hours, WL tickets up to WL15 sometimes confirm on busy routes.
How to Check If Emergency Quota Has Released Seats
- Check the IRCTC availability grid for your train within 4 hours of origin departure โ if EQ has been released, seats may show as available
- Enter your PNR on PNR Alert to see if your WL status has improved
- Subscribe for free WhatsApp PNR alerts โ you get notified the moment your status changes, including from EQ releases
Physical Emergency Quota at Station Counter
For extreme emergencies (medical, death in family, urgent government duty), the station master at the originating station can allocate emergency quota seats on presentation of valid documentation. This is discretionary and not guaranteed โ carry relevant documents and reach the station well before departure.
