Will Your Waitlisted Ticket Get Confirmed?

A waitlisted (WL) ticket on Indian Railways has a good chance of getting confirmed if your waitlist number is low enough. The key is understanding how the waitlist works and using the right strategies to maximize your chances.

Tip 1: Check Confirmation Probability by Waitlist Number

As a rough rule for popular routes:

Waitlist NumberConfirmation Chance
WL 1โ€“10Very High (80โ€“95%)
WL 11โ€“30High (60โ€“80%)
WL 31โ€“60Moderate (30โ€“60%)
WL 60+Low (<30%)

These vary by route, season, and class. PQWL (pooled quota) clears less than GNWL (general quota).

Tip 2: Know Your Waitlist Type

  • GNWL (General Waitlist): From the origin station quota. Clears the fastest.
  • PQWL (Pooled Quota): From an intermediate station. Clears slower โ€” avoid if possible.
  • RLWL (Remote Location): From a remote station's quota. Moderate chances.
  • RSWL (Roadside Waitlist): Very low confirmation rate โ€” try to rebook.

Tip 3: Book from the Origin Station

Tickets booked from the train's origin station get GNWL status, which has the highest confirmation rate. If your journey is between intermediate stations, try booking origin-to-destination (longer journey) for GNWL, then drop off at your actual station.

Tip 4: Try a Different Class

If 3A is waitlisted, check if SL (Sleeper) or 2A has confirmed seats. The same train often has different availability across classes. You can always upgrade from SL to 3A onboard if the TTE has vacant berths (at extra charge).

Tip 5: Use the Vikalp (Alternate Train) Scheme

IRCTC's Vikalp scheme automatically transfers your waitlisted ticket to an alternate confirmed berth on another train on the same day. Opt-in during booking by checking the Vikalp checkbox. If you get transferred, you'll receive an SMS/email before departure.

Tip 6: Try Tatkal for Guaranteed Confirmation

Tatkal quota opens 1 day before departure at 10 AM (AC) or 11 AM (non-AC). Tatkal fares are 30โ€“50% higher but you are almost guaranteed a confirmed ticket. Worth it for urgent travel.

Tip 7: Monitor Cancellations 48 Hours Before

Most cancellations happen in the 24โ€“48 hours before departure as passengers adjust plans. Keep checking your PNR status during this window โ€” waitlists move significantly. Use PNR Alert to get an automatic WhatsApp notification the moment your ticket moves up or gets confirmed, without checking manually.

Tip 8: Check RAC as a Fallback

If you don't get fully confirmed, RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) still lets you board the train. You get a shared side lower berth and travel to your destination. The TTE may upgrade you to a full berth onboard if confirmed passengers don't board.
