Can RAC Passenger Travel?

Yes. RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. RAC status means you are guaranteed boarding and travel โ€” unlike Waitlist (WL) passengers. You have a valid ticket and the TTE cannot deny you entry to the train.

How RAC Seat Sharing Works

Two RAC passengers are allotted one side lower berth. During the day, both passengers sit on the berth. At night, one may lie down โ€” typically worked out by mutual agreement between the two passengers.

If a confirmed passenger cancels or does not board, the TTE will usually upgrade one RAC passenger to that vacant confirmed berth. Low RAC numbers (RAC 1, RAC 2) have the highest chance of this upgrade.

Tips for RAC Passengers

  1. Board early and locate your coach โ€” RAC berths are side lower berths in the main body of the coach.
  2. Inform the TTE when you board so they know to assign you a full berth if one opens up.
  3. Keep checking your PNR โ€” upgrades can happen right up to departure time.
