What is PNR Status? — CNF, WL, RAC, CAN Explained

PNR status tells you whether each passenger on your Indian Railways ticket has a confirmed berth, is on the waitlist, or is travelling on RAC. After you book on IRCTC, your PNR status changes as passengers cancel and berths free up — until the final chart is prepared, typically 4 hours before departure.

StatusFull FormWhat It Means
CNF Confirmed Your berth is confirmed. After chart prep, you will see your exact coach (e.g. S5) and berth number (e.g. 42 LB).
WL Waitlisted Your berth is not yet confirmed. You need your WL number to reach 0 before chart preparation to get CNF or RAC status. If still WL at chart, the ticket is auto-cancelled and refunded.
RAC Reservation Against Cancellation You share a side-lower berth. You can board the train. The TTE may allot you a full berth if a confirmed passenger does not show up.
CAN Cancelled Ticket cancelled — either by the passenger or automatically after chart preparation for unconfirmed waitlisted tickets. Refund is processed automatically.

Waitlist Types: GNWL, PQWL, RLWL, RSWL

GNWL tickets with a low waitlist number (under 20 for Rajdhani and Shatabdi, under 50 for Sleeper) have a good chance of confirmation, especially on popular routes. Check your PNR status regularly as the journey date approaches.

PNR Status with Passenger Name

When you check PNR status on PNR Alert, you see the individual status for each passenger on the ticket. For a group booking of 4 passengers, each person has their own booking status and current status — they can differ if some passengers got confirmed while others remain on the waitlist.

After chart preparation, each confirmed passenger's PNR status shows their assigned coach and berth — for example, S5-42 LB (Sleeper Coach 5, Berth 42, Lower Berth). RAC passengers see their RAC number and side-lower berth assignment.

The PNR status system does not display passenger names publicly for privacy. But each passenger number (P1, P2, P3...) maps to the booking order in which they were entered during IRCTC reservation.

How to Check PNR Status Online — Step by Step

PNR Status — Frequently Asked Questions

CNF means your ticket is Confirmed. Your berth is guaranteed and you can board the train. After chart preparation, the PNR status updates with your exact coach and berth number.
WL means Waitlisted. Your berth is not yet confirmed. As passengers above you on the waitlist cancel, your number moves up. If it reaches 0 before chart preparation, it upgrades to CNF or RAC. If still WL at chart, the ticket is automatically cancelled and refunded — you cannot board with a WL ticket after chart preparation.
RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. You are permitted to board and travel, but you share a side-lower berth. The TTE may allot you a full confirmed berth during the journey if a confirmed passenger does not board.
