When Indian Railways cancels a train โ€” due to floods, technical failures, operational issues, or special circumstances โ€” all passengers on that train are entitled to a complete refund regardless of ticket class, quota, or travel date.

Types of Train Cancellations

  • Full cancellation: The entire train is cancelled for a specific date or dates
  • Partial cancellation: The train is cancelled between certain stations (short-termination), affecting some passengers but not others
  • Rescheduling: Not a cancellation โ€” train runs on a different time. Refund is not automatic; passengers can choose to cancel if inconvenient

Refund Process for E-Tickets (IRCTC Online Bookings)

If you booked online on IRCTC or authorised agents:

  1. Indian Railways marks the train as cancelled in the system
  2. IRCTC automatically cancels all PNRs on that train
  3. Full refund is initiated to your original payment method
  4. No action required from you

The refund reaches your account within 5โ€“10 working days depending on payment method (UPI is fastest; credit cards take longest).

Refund for Counter / Offline Tickets

For tickets purchased at railway booking counters:

  • Visit any booking counter within 3 days of the original journey date
  • Submit the original ticket for refund
  • Receive refund in cash at the counter

What Happens to Your PNR After Cancellation?

The PNR status will show CAN (Cancelled) within a few hours of the railway cancelling the train. If you check the PNR on PNR Alert and see CAN with a refund notice, the process is underway.

Train Rescheduled (Not Cancelled) โ€” Can I Refund?

If your train is rescheduled by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to cancel your ticket and get a full refund by filing a TDR within 72 hours of the rescheduled departure. This must be done manually โ€” it is not automatic for rescheduled trains.

How to Check If Your Train Is Cancelled

Check the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) at enquiry.indianrail.gov.in, the IRCTC website, or set up WhatsApp alerts on PNR Alert โ€” you will be notified automatically if your train's status changes.
