What Happens If My Waitlisted Ticket Is Not Confirmed?
If your IRCTC ticket remains on the waitlist after chart preparation, it is automatically cancelled by the system. You cannot board the train with a waitlisted ticket after charts are prepared.
The good news: you get a full refund (minus a small cancellation charge) automatically within 5–7 business days to your original payment method.
When Is Chart Prepared?
Chart preparation typically happens 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure from its origin station. For trains starting at night, chart preparation may happen the previous evening.
After chart preparation, you can see the final berth allotment on the IRCTC app or website.
Can I Board the Train With a Waitlisted Ticket?
No. If your ticket shows WL status after chart preparation, you cannot board the train. The TTE (Train Ticket Examiner) will not allow it. Only RAC and Confirmed tickets are valid for travel.
What Are My Options If My Ticket Is Not Confirmed?
1. Book a Tatkal Ticket
Tatkal booking opens 1 day before departure. Seats are usually available but at a premium price (higher than normal fares). This is the fastest alternative if you must travel.
2. Check Alternate Trains on the Same Route
Use PNR Alert's Route Search to find other trains on the same route on your date. Sometimes trains with availability are missed during initial booking.
3. Cancel and Get Refund
If you cancel a waitlisted ticket before chart preparation, you get a full refund minus a small charge (₹60 for SL, ₹120 for 3A, ₹240 for 2A/1A). If charts are already prepared, the refund is automatic — you do not need to cancel manually.
4. File a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt)
If your train was delayed by more than 3 hours or cancelled by Indian Railways, you can file a TDR to get a refund even for confirmed tickets where you did not travel. File within 72 hours on the IRCTC website.
How to Know Before It's Too Late
The biggest problem with waitlisted tickets is not knowing the final status in time to make alternate arrangements. Use PNR Alert to get a WhatsApp message when:
- Your waitlist improves significantly
- Chart is prepared (and your final status)
- Your ticket remains unconfirmed — so you know to book an alternative
This way you get notified hours before departure, not 30 minutes before when it is too late to do anything.
