5 Ways to Find Your Coach Position

1. NTES Website or App (Most Reliable)

The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) at enquiry.indianrail.gov.in shows coach composition for most trains. Go to "Spot Your Train" or "Coach Position" feature, enter your train number, and see the full rake composition with coach order.

2. IRCTC Website โ€” Coach Composition

On the IRCTC website, search for your train โ†’ click on the train โ†’ look for the "Coach Composition" tab. This shows the order of coaches from engine to rear.

3. Station Display Boards

Major stations have digital display boards in the waiting area showing the train's coach composition and platform assignment. These update in real time as the train is announced.

4. Platform Spot Markers

The most reliable on-the-spot method: painted markers on the platform floor and walls showing coach names (A1, B1, B2, S1, S5, etc.). Stand at your coach name's marker about 15โ€“20 minutes before arrival. Your coach stops right there.

How to read them: Walk along the platform and look for the board matching your coach. On a busy platform, these markers help you avoid the last-minute scramble of running to the right coach.

5. Ask Station Staff or Master

For smaller stations or unusual trains, ask the platform staff or the station master's office. They usually have the rake composition information.

General Pattern โ€” Where Coaches Stop

Coach typeTypical positionNote
EngineHead of platform (end 1)Walk toward the engine end
First AC (1A / HA1)Near engine (Rajdhani, Duronto)Varies by train โ€” verify on NTES
Second AC (2A / A1, A2)After 1A, toward engineโ€“
Third AC (3A / B1, B2โ€ฆ)After 2AB1 is closer to AC; higher numbers toward rear
Sleeper (SL / S1, S2โ€ฆ)Middle to rear of trainS1 is closest to AC; S12 is near the end
General (GN / UR)Last coaches, far rearAlways most crowded

Important: This is a general pattern only. Different trains have different rake compositions โ€” some Rajdhanis have 1AC in the middle, some express trains have Sleeper near the engine. Always verify using NTES for your specific train.

Quick Tip for the Day of Travel

Arrive at the platform at least 15 minutes before the train. Find the spot marker for your coach within the first 5 minutes of reaching the platform. This is far better than trying to locate your coach after the train arrives โ€” you'll only have 2โ€“3 minutes before departure.
