RAC Seats Per 3AC Coach
Each 3AC coach has 6 side-lower berths designated as RAC berths. Two RAC passengers share each berth, so 12 RAC passengers board per coach. A train with 5–6 three-AC coaches typically has 30–36 RAC positions.
Unlike Sleeper class (8 RAC per coach with higher cancellation volumes), 3AC passengers cancel less often — making the RAC queue move slower.

What Happens if Your RAC 3AC Doesn't Confirm?
You still board and share the side-lower berth with the other RAC passenger. The TTE assigns the berth — you do not need to negotiate with anyone. Both passengers have equal rights to the berth for the journey.
If you are travelling overnight and want a full berth, speak to the TTE after the train departs. Sometimes cancellations happen after departure and TTEs reallocate available berths.
RAC in 3AC vs Sleeper — Which Is Better?
If you have a choice between RAC in 3AC and RAC in Sleeper with a similar position number, Sleeper typically offers higher confirmation chances due to more RAC berths and more cancellations. However, 3AC is air-conditioned — so factor in your comfort preference.
