Guide to IRCTC PNR Status
What is a PNR number?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique 10-digit number printed on every IRCTC train ticket. This number holds all the details of your booking β train number, journey date, passenger names, class, and current reservation status. You need your PNR number to check whether your ticket has been confirmed.
What do PNR status codes mean?
Indian Railways uses several status codes to show your booking state:
- CNF (Confirmed) β Your berth is confirmed. Coach and seat number are assigned after chart preparation.
- RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) β You have a side-lower berth to sit on. If a confirmed passenger cancels, your RAC ticket upgrades to a full berth.
- WL / GNWL (Waitlist) β Your ticket is not yet confirmed. As passengers cancel, your waitlist number moves up. GNWL is the strongest waitlist type and has the highest confirmation rate.
- PQWL / RLWL / TQWL β Weaker waitlist types with lower confirmation chances. PQWL is a pooled quota shared between multiple stations. TQWL (Tatkal quota waitlist) almost never confirms.
- CAN (Cancelled) β The ticket has been cancelled by the passenger or was not confirmed at chart preparation.
When does the PNR status change?
PNR status changes every time a confirmed passenger cancels their ticket. The biggest movement happens in the 48 hours before departure and when the Tatkal booking window opens (1 day before journey). The final status is decided at chart preparation, which happens 4β6 hours before the train departs. After chart preparation, no further changes are possible β waitlisted tickets that did not confirm are automatically cancelled and a full refund is issued by IRCTC.
