A waitlisted IRCTC ticket creates uncertainty — will it confirm or not? Understanding the factors that determine confirmation probability helps you plan better and avoid last-minute stress.
Check Your Confirmation Probability on PNR Alert
The fastest way: go to pnralert.in, enter your PNR, and scroll to the Confirmation Estimate section. You will see a percentage (e.g. 78%) and a label — High Chance, Moderate, or Low — calculated from your actual ticket data.
Factors That Affect WL Confirmation Chances
1. WL Number
The lower your WL number, the higher your chances.
| WL Range | Sleeper (SL) | 3A AC |
|---|---|---|
| WL 1–10 | High (75–90%) | High (70–85%) |
| WL 11–25 | Moderate (45–70%) | Moderate (35–60%) |
| WL 26–50 | Low (20–40%) | Low (10–25%) |
| WL 51+ | Very Low (<20%) | Very Low (<10%) |
2. Quota Type
- GNWL (General Waitlist) — Best confirmation rate, draws from full quota pool
- RLWL (Remote Location) — Lower rate, limited to cancellations from that boarding station
- PQWL (Pooled Quota) — Lowest rate, shared pool across multiple stations
- TQWL (Tatkal Waitlist) — Very low, only clears if Tatkal passengers cancel
3. Train Popularity and Route
Trains on the Delhi–Mumbai, Delhi–Kolkata and Delhi–Patna corridors have high cancellation rates as many passengers book multiple options and cancel. Less popular trains on regional routes have fewer cancellations and lower confirmation rates.
4. Days Until Journey
The closer your journey date, the more movement you will see. The 48-hour window before departure is when most cancellations happen. Emergency quota (released 4 hours before departure from origin) can clear another 5–10 tickets on most trains.
5. Travel Class
Sleeper class has more berths and higher cancellation volume, so WL tickets confirm more often. AC classes have fewer berths and lower cancellation rates — a WL 10 in 3A may or may not confirm depending on the train.
When to Book an Alternative
If your WL number is above 30 in Sleeper or above 15 in AC, and your journey is within 5 days, consider:
- Tatkal booking on the same train (opens day before at 10/11 AM)
- Checking an alternate train on the same route
- Booking on an adjacent date with better availability
