What Is Premium Tatkal?

Premium Tatkal (PT quota) is Indian Railways' airline-style dynamic pricing tier for last-minute bookings. Unlike regular Tatkal which adds a fixed surcharge, Premium Tatkal prices rise automatically as seats get booked โ€” early in the window prices are lower, but they can reach 3โ€“4ร— base fare by the time only a few seats remain.

Premium Tatkal is available only on selected high-demand trains: Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Garib Rath, and some popular Mail/Express trains on busy routes.

Which Should You Book?

Book Regular Tatkal (CK) if:

  • CK seats are available โ€” it has a predictable, fixed surcharge
  • You want to know the exact price before paying
  • You are booking in SL class (PT may not exist for SL on all trains)

Consider Premium Tatkal (PT) if:

  • CK quota is sold out on your train
  • You book immediately at 10 AM when PT prices are lowest
  • Urgent travel where paying 2ร— base fare is acceptable

Avoid Premium Tatkal if the PT price has already spiked to 3ร— or more โ€” at that point, check if a different train has regular Tatkal availability or if there's a flight option.

Can Premium Tatkal Tickets Be Cancelled?

Premium Tatkal tickets are non-refundable on voluntary cancellation โ€” no exceptions. You will lose the entire ticket cost. The only exception is if Indian Railways cancels the train โ€” in that case you can file TDR for a full refund. This makes Premium Tatkal strictly a "use it or lose it" purchase.

How to Check Premium Tatkal Price Before Booking

  1. Log in to IRCTC and search for your train on tomorrow's date
  2. On the availability table, look for the "PT" quota column (appears after CK column)
  3. Click "PT" to see the current dynamic price โ€” compare with CK
  4. Book immediately if the price is acceptable โ€” PT prices rise during the session
