Before chart preparation
In general, cancellation before chart preparation gives the best refund outcome, although charges can vary by class and how close the departure time is.
After chart preparation
After chart preparation, refund options become more limited. In many cases the ticket may not qualify for the same refund treatment as an early cancellation, so always review the latest applicable rules before cancelling.
Waitlist and RAC cases
Waitlist and RAC tickets can behave differently from fully confirmed tickets. Track the final status carefully and avoid assuming that every ticket type follows the same refund pattern.
Why timing matters
If you are unsure whether to wait or cancel, compare confirmation chance, route alternatives, and time left before chart preparation so you can make a better decision.
Common Questions
Is refund higher before chart preparation?
Usually yes. Cancelling earlier generally gives more refund flexibility than waiting until after chart preparation.
Do waitlisted tickets follow the same refund logic as confirmed tickets?
Not always. Waitlist, RAC, and confirmed tickets can be treated differently, so check the current ticket status first.
How should I decide whether to cancel?
Compare your live PNR movement, backup train options, and how close you are to chart preparation before deciding.
How much is the cancellation charge on a confirmed ticket?
For confirmed tickets, cancellation charges depend on class and how far in advance you cancel — typically ₹60 (2S/SL), ₹120 (AC classes) flat charge when cancelled more than 48 hours before departure. Charges increase as departure approaches.
Can I get a refund on a Tatkal ticket?
Generally no — Tatkal tickets are non-refundable once the Tatkal booking window opens. There is no TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) refund available for Tatkal cancellations in most cases.
What is TDR in Indian Railways?
TDR stands for Ticket Deposit Receipt — a formal refund request filed when the train is late, cancelled, or you were unable to board for a valid reason. TDR can be filed online via IRCTC within a limited window.
