CNF Without a Berth Number โ€” Is That Normal?

Yes. When you book in advance, IRCTC shows CNF to indicate the seat is reserved. The specific coach and berth number are not assigned until the train chart is prepared (typically 4โ€“8 hours before departure). This is completely normal and your ticket is fully valid.

What CNF Status Looks Like

  • CNF โ€” confirmed, no berth yet (pre-chart)
  • CNF/S4/32 โ€” confirmed, coach S4, berth 32
  • CNF/B1/12 โ€” confirmed, coach B1, berth 12 (3AC)
  • CNF/A1/5 โ€” confirmed, coach A1, berth 5 (2AC)

What to Do After Getting CNF

  1. Download your e-ticket from IRCTC (My Transactions โ†’ Print ERS)
  2. Carry a valid ID โ€” Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, or Voter ID matching the passenger name
  3. Check berth number on the day of travel after chart preparation
  4. Board your coach โ€” find your berth number on the coach door chart or digital display

CNF vs Other Statuses

Unlike RAC (reserved but sharing a berth) or WL (waitlisted with no guarantee), CNF gives you a fully private berth. You do not need to negotiate with the TTE or share your space.
