Before heading to the station, confirm your train is actually running. Trains get cancelled or rescheduled due to floods, technical issues, and operational reasons โ sometimes with only a few hours of notice. Here are the five most reliable ways to check.
Method 1: NTES (National Train Enquiry System)
The official source. Visit enquiry.indianrail.gov.in and select "Spot Your Train." Enter your train number and date. You will see the current location, delays, and whether the train is running, cancelled, or rescheduled. This is the most authoritative data source.
Method 2: IRCTC Rail Connect App
Open the IRCTC Rail Connect app and navigate to "Train Status." Enter the train number to see real-time running status, station-by-station delay information, and cancellation status. Also available on the IRCTC website under "Live Train Status."
Method 3: PNR Alert
Enter your train number at pnralert.in/train-status to check the live running status. Set up a train alert to receive WhatsApp notifications if your train is significantly delayed or shows unusual status changes.
Method 4: 139 Railway Enquiry (Phone)
Call 139 โ the national Railway enquiry helpline. Select train running status from the menu and enter your train number. Available 24/7 in multiple languages.
Method 5: Station Enquiry Counter
If you are already at the station, the enquiry counter has real-time display boards and staff with live train information. The large departure display boards also show cancellation and delay information.
What to Do If Your Train Is Cancelled
| Ticket Type | Action |
|---|---|
| E-ticket (IRCTC) | Automatic full refund, no action needed |
| Counter ticket | Visit counter within 3 days for manual refund |
| Tatkal ticket (cancelled train) | Full refund including Tatkal charges |
Train Delayed, Not Cancelled โ What About Refund?
A delayed train is not grounds for an automatic refund. However, if the delay exceeds 3 hours, you can file a TDR on IRCTC within 72 hours of departure to claim a refund.
