How Many RAC Seats Are There in Sleeper Class?
Each Sleeper (SL) coach has 8 RAC berths — the 8 side-lower berths, each shared by two RAC passengers. A train with 12 Sleeper coaches has 96 RAC berths total, meaning 192 RAC passengers can board (sharing).
After chart preparation, confirmed passengers who cancel create empty berths. These are given to RAC holders in order. On most routes, 30–60 out of every 100 RAC berths get freed by passenger cancellations.

What Happens to RAC Ticket at Chart Preparation?
When chart is prepared (usually 4–6 hours before departure), the TTE assigns berths to RAC holders in order. Any CNF passenger who has not boarded or has cancelled creates a free berth. RAC 1 gets that berth first, then RAC 2, and so on.
If no berths free up, RAC passengers share the side-lower berth for the entire journey. The TTE will split the night: one passenger sleeps from 9 PM to 3 AM, the other from 3 AM to 9 AM, if both agree.
