Missing a train is stressful, but there are options. If you miss your train at the origin station, you have limited options: cancel for a partial refund (if more than 4 hours before departure) or try to catch it at the next station. Ticket transfer is NOT allowed. This guide covers all scenarios.

Option 1: Cancel the Ticket for Partial Refund
If your train has not yet departed and you are still more than 4 hours before departure, cancel the ticket online for a partial refund (50% refund for confirmed tickets). If it's within 4 hours of departure, cancellation is not possible online for confirmed tickets. You can try counter cancellation for a TDR.
Option 2: Catch the Train at the Next Station
This is technically allowed — you can board a train at any intermediate station where it stops, as long as your ticket shows that station as either the origin or an intermediate stop. You will need to show your valid ticket. However, if the train left without you from the boarding station, you cannot rebook or reassign the berth to someone else.
Option 3: File TDR for Refund
After chart preparation, online cancellation is locked. Go to the IRCTC website → My Transactions → File TDR. Reason: 'Passenger unable to travel due to valid reasons.' TDR refund is at Railways' discretion and takes 60–90 days. Approval is not guaranteed for missed train.
Ticket Transfer Is Not Allowed
Indian Railways does NOT allow ticket transfer to another person. If you cannot travel, you can only cancel for a refund — you cannot give the ticket to a friend or family member.
What About RAC or Waitlisted Passengers?
If you hold a RAC or WL ticket and missed the train, the berth/seat is forfeited. You get a full refund only if the WL ticket was unconfirmed at chart preparation (auto-cancelled by Railways).

Yes, if that station is on your ticket's route and the train stops there. Board in your booked class and show your original ticket.
Can I transfer my train ticket to someone else?
