Ladies Quota in Indian Railways: Seats, Eligibility & Booking Guide 2026
Indian Railways reserves seats for women passengers through the Ladies Quota (LQ). In Sleeper class, 6 lower berths per coach are reserved for women, senior citizens (men and women), and persons with disabilities. In 3AC, 4 lower berths per coach are reserved. Lower Berth Quota for Women
In Sleeper class: 6 lower berths per sleeper coach are reserved — 4 exclusively for women, 1 for senior citizens (60+), 1 for orthopedically handicapped passengers. In 3AC: 4 lower berths reserved. The reserved lower berths are allocated automatically to eligible passengers during booking. Women can book any berth; the reserved lower berths are allocated preferentially.
Ladies Special Coaches
Many trains (especially local/EMU and some long-distance trains) have a dedicated Ladies Coach — typically the second or third coach from the engine or the last coach. Male passengers except small children and those escorting disabled passengers are not allowed in Ladies coaches.
Ladies Quota on IRCTC
Women booking on IRCTC automatically get priority for lower berths in Sleeper and 3AC. When booking, if the passenger is female, IRCTC allocates lower berth if available in the ladies quota. For Rajdhani/Shatabdi, lower berths are similarly reserved but in smaller numbers.
When Ladies Quota Releases
If ladies quota seats are not taken by women passengers, they are released to general passengers during chart preparation (4–6 hours before departure). This is why you sometimes see 'LQ' berths becoming available late — they convert to GNWL at chart time.
