120-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP)

Indian Railways allows booking up to 120 days before the date of journey, excluding the journey date itself. Booking opens at 8:00 AM IST on that day. For a journey on October 31, you can start booking from July 3 at 8 AM.

Tatkal booking window: 1 day before

Tatkal tickets open 1 day before the journey date, excluding the journey day. AC Tatkal (3A, 2A, 1A, CC) opens at 10:00 AM IST. Non-AC Tatkal (SL, 2S) opens at 11:00 AM IST on IRCTC. Tatkal fare has a fixed surcharge on top of the base fare.

Premium Tatkal: same window, dynamic pricing

Premium Tatkal opens at the same time as regular Tatkal but uses dynamic pricing — fare increases as more tickets are sold. Once the quota fills, no more Premium Tatkal tickets are issued on that train.

Current booking: for same-day journeys

For trains departing within about 4 hours, remaining seats open as current booking at railway counters (PRS). IRCTC also allows same-day booking online up to departure time in most cases, subject to chart preparation.

Railway booking opens at 8 AM — be ready

The 120-day window refreshes at 8:00 AM IST. For popular trains, confirmed tickets can sell out in minutes. Have IRCTC logged in, passengers added, payment ready, and train/class selected before 8 AM.
