3A — 3 Tier AC (Third AC)

Air-conditioned class with the same upper, middle, lower layout as Sleeper. 64–72 berths per coach. The most popular AC class for overnight travel — balances comfort and cost. Available on most express and superfast trains.

2A — 2 Tier AC (Second AC)

AC coach with 4 berths per coupe — upper and lower on both sides. More privacy and wider berths than 3AC. Only 46 berths per coach. Priced between 3AC and First AC. Good for privacy on long routes.

1A — First Class AC

The most premium class with fully enclosed 2 or 4-berth cabins, bedding, and maximum privacy. Available only on select Rajdhani and premium trains. Fare is close to air travel on many routes.

CC — Chair Car and EC — Executive Chair Car

2S — Second Sitting

Cheapest reserved class with bench-style seats and no berths. Available on passenger, intercity, and short-distance trains. Best for journeys under 4–6 hours during daytime.

Common Questions

What is the cheapest class in Indian Railways?

2S (Second Sitting) and unreserved General class are the cheapest. For overnight berth classes, Sleeper (SL) is cheapest.

Which is better, 3AC or 2AC?

2AC has fewer berths per coupe and more privacy. 3AC is more affordable with a similar AC experience. For most passengers, 3AC is the popular balance between comfort and cost.

What does 3A mean in IRCTC booking?

3A stands for 3 Tier AC — a coach with three levels of berths (upper, middle, lower) with air conditioning. It is the most common AC class on Indian trains.

Does Rajdhani have Sleeper class?

No. Rajdhani Express only has AC classes — 3A, 2A, and 1A — with meals included in the fare.
