Platform ticket prices vary by station category: A1 stations (Mumbai CSMT, Delhi, Howrah, Chennai, Bengaluru): ₹50. A stations: ₹30–₹50. B–F category stations: ₹10–₹30. The price was raised from ₹10 to ₹50 at major A1 stations in 2020 to discourage crowding. During COVID and major events, some stations temporarily raised prices to ₹100.
How to Buy a Platform Ticket
At station: Go to the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counter or Unreserved Ticket counter. Ask for 'Platform Ticket' for that specific station. Pay cash or card. The ticket is valid for 2 hours. Online via UTS App: Download the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) app by IRCTC. Go to Platform Ticket → Select station → Pay via UPI. Valid for the date shown on ticket.
Validity and Rules
A platform ticket is valid for 2 hours from time of issue OR until the last train departs, whichever is earlier. Maximum 2 platform tickets per person at major stations. Not valid for boarding the train — you need a travel ticket for that. Children below 5: free platform entry.
When Is Entry Free Without Platform Ticket?
Medical emergencies: free entry with patient accompanying. Senior citizens above 60 who need assistance: free platform entry (show ID). Differently-abled passengers: free entry. These exemptions are at the station master's discretion.
