Vikalp Scheme: Alternate Train for WL Passengers

Vikalp (meaning 'alternative' in Hindi) offers waitlisted passengers a confirmed berth on an alternate train if their original train's WL doesn't clear. Key points: Opt-in during booking by selecting 'Vikalp' option. Alternate train must serve the same origin-destination (or close stations). Same class as original booking. No extra charge — same fare. You are moved to a different train if WL doesn't clear. You can opt out before chart preparation if you change your mind.

Class Upgrade (Tatkal and General)

Rarely, Railways upgrades passengers from a lower waitlisted class to a confirmed seat in a higher class. Example: WL in Sleeper upgraded to confirmed 3AC. This is at TTE/chart preparation discretion. No application is needed — it happens automatically based on availability. You pay only the original fare.

How to Opt-In to Vikalp

During IRCTC booking: After entering passenger details, if you are booking on a WL or RAC quota, you will see an option 'Opt for Vikalp (Alternative Train Scheme)'. Select 'Yes'. You will get a confirmation that Vikalp is opted. If Vikalp is triggered, you will receive an SMS/email with the alternate train PNR.
