IRCTC ID Proof Required: Which Documents Are Valid for Train Travel 2026
Quick Answer
Indian Railways requires a valid photo ID for train travel. At least one passenger on a PNR must show ID if checked by the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner). The ID must match the name and age on the ticket. This guide lists all accepted IDs.

Valid ID Proofs Accepted on Indian Trains
The following photo IDs are accepted by TTEs and railway authorities: Aadhar Card (UID). Voter ID / Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC). Passport. PAN Card (with photo). Driving Licence. Government Employee Photo ID Card. Student ID Card (for students claiming concessions). Disabled/Handicapped person identity card issued by Central/State Government. Bank Passbook with photo issued by Nationalised Banks. Child birth certificate (for children under 5 without a photo ID).
When Is ID Checked?
TTEs regularly check tickets, especially in Sleeper and AC coaches on long-distance trains. You are required to show ID on demand. If the name/ID doesn't match the ticket: TTE can fine you and ask you to deboard at the next station. For group tickets, at least one of the passengers may be asked to show ID for the whole group.
Aadhar as Preferred ID
Aadhar (UID) is the most commonly used and accepted ID. You can show the Aadhar PDF on your phone — a digital Aadhar is accepted. The name on the ticket must match the Aadhar name. Carry a digital copy or physical copy.
International Passengers
Foreign nationals must carry their Passport + valid Indian visa. For foreign tourist quota bookings, Passport is mandatory at both booking and travel.
Common Questions
Which ID is best for train travel in India?
Aadhar Card is the most universally accepted. Carry it digitally on your phone or physically.
Can I travel with a digital ID on my phone?
Yes — digital Aadhar from the mAadhar app or UIDAI-issued PDF is accepted. Take a screenshot in case of poor mobile network on the train.
What happens if ID doesn't match my ticket name?
The TTE can fine you ₹250–₹500 and ask you to deboard. Ensure your name on IRCTC profile matches your ID.
Is PAN card valid for train travel?
Yes — PAN card with photo is a valid ID proof for train travel.
Can a child travel without ID?
Children below 5 travel free and do not need a separate ID. Children 5–12 (half-fare) should carry a birth certificate or school ID.
