What Does Seat Availability Mean?
| Status | What It Means | Should You Book? |
|---|---|---|
| AVAILABLE | Confirmed seats are open. You will get a confirmed berth immediately on booking. | Yes β book now before seats fill up |
| RAC | No confirmed berths left, but RAC seats available. You can board and share a side-lower berth. May get upgraded to confirmed by TTE. | Yes β if you must travel, RAC allows boarding |
| WL#10 | Train is full. You join a waitlist. If 10+ passengers cancel before chart preparation, your ticket upgrades to CNF or RAC. If not cleared, you get an automatic full refund. | Only if WL number is low (under 20 for Rajdhani, under 50 for Sleeper) |
| REGRET | Not available in any quota. No seats at all β waitlist is closed too. | Try a different train or date |
Train Classes β Which One to Choose?
Indian Railways trains have multiple classes with different fares and comfort levels. Check availability in each class separately.
Not all classes are available on all trains. Rajdhani does not have Sleeper class. Vande Bharat has CC and EC only.
Tips to Get a Confirmed Seat When Train is Full
- Book 60 days in advance β IRCTC opens bookings 60 days before departure. Popular trains fill up within minutes of opening. Set an alert or be ready at 8 AM IST on the opening day.
- Try different quotas β Even if General quota is waitlisted, Ladies quota, Senior Citizen quota, or Foreign Tourist quota may have confirmed seats. Check each quota separately on IRCTC.
- Use Tatkal booking β Opens 1 day before departure at 10 AM (AC) or 11 AM (SL). Higher fare but often gets you a confirmed seat even when General quota is full.
- Check alternate trains β Use PNR Alert Route Search to compare all trains on your route. A slightly different departure time may have confirmed seats available.
- Book nearby origin station β Sometimes a station earlier on the route has more available quota (PQWL becomes GNWL from the origin station).
- Monitor waitlist with PNR Alert β If you take a waitlisted ticket, use PNR Alert's WhatsApp alerts to track confirmation in real time β you'll know immediately if your ticket confirms.
