What Is RAC?
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you have a seat on the train but share a berth with another RAC passenger — you both get side-lower seats in Sleeper or 3AC. If a confirmed passenger cancels, one RAC passenger gets a full berth and moves to CNF status.
When Does RAC Become CNF?
RAC-to-CNF happens in two phases: Before chart: When confirmed passengers cancel, RAC passengers are upgraded automatically in order. After chart (at departure): The TTE checks for no-shows. Confirmed passengers who did not board free up berths — TTE upgrades RAC passengers on the train. After chart preparation: No more automatic upgrades. TTE manually upgrades RAC passengers based on no-shows.
What to Do If You Have RAC
Board the train with your RAC ticket — it is a valid travel document. Find the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) and show your RAC ticket. The TTE will allocate a berth if any confirmed passenger is a no-show. On most trains, 50–80% of RAC tickets get upgraded to CNF — especially after departure.
RAC on Vande Bharat and Chair Car Trains
Chair car trains (Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Jan Shatabdi) have individual seats, not berths. RAC on these trains means a middle seat between two confirmed passengers. Upgrade to a full confirmed window/aisle seat happens when someone cancels.
