What 2S means

2S stands for Second Sitting class. It is a reserved seating class with assigned seat numbers but no sleeping berths. Seats are bench-style facing forward, similar to a bus or intercity coach.

Which trains have 2S

2S is found on passenger trains, intercity expresses, and Jan Shatabdi trains on shorter routes — typically under 200–500 km. It is not available on Rajdhani or most overnight mail express trains.

2S vs Sleeper SL — key difference

Sleeper class (SL) has proper upper, middle, and lower berths for lying down — suited for overnight journeys. 2S has only seats, no berths. SL is more expensive. If your journey is overnight or over 6 hours, book SL or AC, not 2S.

2S vs General unreserved class

General (GEN) class has no reserved seats — you board any compartment and find a space. 2S is reserved — you have a confirmed seat number for the journey, but no berth for lying down.

Booking 2S on IRCTC

2S can be booked on IRCTC like any other class. It can have waitlist tickets. Since seat counts are smaller on 2S coaches, waitlist movement can be fast on busy routes.

Common Questions

What is the difference between 2S and SL in a train?

2S (Second Sitting) has only seats — no berths, no overnight sleeping space. SL (Sleeper) has upper, middle, and lower berths. For overnight travel, always book SL or AC, not 2S.

Can I sleep in 2S class?

No. 2S has only forward-facing seats. If you need to sleep, book Sleeper class (SL) or an AC berth class.

Is 2S cheaper than Sleeper?

Yes. 2S is significantly cheaper than Sleeper because it is a seat-only class for shorter daytime journeys.

Does 2S class have AC?

Standard 2S is non-AC. For AC day-travel seating, look for CC (Chair Car) or EC (Executive Chair Car) classes on Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains.
